St. Charles Community College is pleased to announce "Placement" a Photography Invitational shown in conjunction with the "UMSL Student Photography Exhibition" located in the gallery of the Donald D. Shook Fine Arts Building on campus. The participating invitational artists include Robert Boettcher, Richard Glass, Beth Goyer, Hilary Hitchcock, Donald J. McKenna, and Bob Rickert. This exhibition runs from Jan. 30-March 4, 2012 with an opening reception on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

"wonderfully weird...": Pinholio exhibit at Good Citizen Gallery

The Riverfront Times has a short and sweet review of the Pinholio exhibit at Good Citizen Gallery, in which I have two photos.

The show is only up through December 17, so if you want to take a look, you'd better get there soon!

This weekend is a good opportunity, when the gallery will be hosting a holiday sale by Sprouted Designs, which will include housewares, children's clothes, and tea towels, among other things. Check it out!

The Sprouted Designs sale is Saturday and Sunday, December 10-11, from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Pinholio show at Good Citizen Gallery

I've been sort of laying low on the photo front for a while, but I saw a call for entries to a pinhole photo show, and I've really been wanting to make some pinhole photos, so I took some at the Missouri State Fair and submitted them to Good Citizen Gallery in south St. Louis, where Pinholio will be held.

And yay! They accepted two of my photos—the one above, and another. You'll just have to come to the show if you want to see it.

The opening is Friday, November 18, 2011, starting at 6:00 p.m. Come!

First autumn CSA share

If you've been following my blog (and really, who hasn't? Hi, Mom!), you know that I've been super excited about the CSA share I've been getting from Dutchtown's own Maude's Market.

The autumn session has just started, and man, every time I think Maude can't top herself, she goes and does it!

This past weekend's share included bison meat, sweet potatoes, figs, Billy Goat chips (so yum), baby kale, pears, and lepina (amazing Bosnian flatbread.)

Everything=so good. If you aren't near Maude's Market, and you haven't already looked into CSA shares in your area, I absolutely recommend you check it out.

What's that you say? You want a closer look at the goods? They are so pretty that they love to pose, so here are some highlights of our little photo session.

If you have talked to me at all this summer, you know that all I want to talk about is my CSA share. I can’t believe I haven’t gotten around to photographing any of my CSA bounty until now.

What’s CSA? That’s Community Supported Agriculture! The quick explanation is that it’s a subscription-type program through which I buy groceries each week from local farmers and other producers. More on CSA in general here.

I get my CSA share from the wonderful Maude’s Market in Dutchtown. Once a week Maude sends an e-mail detailing what will be in that week’s share. It usually includes produce, meat (vegetarian shares available), a staple, and a treat. A well-rounded meal plan if you ask me!

I’m nuts about it. I’ve cooked things I’ve never cooked with before, such as tatsoi and ground mutton; I’ve made dishes I never thought of before, like cantaloupe salad with basil and mint; and I’ve gotten to spend the summer with old favorites, like sweet corn, beautiful tomatoes, and fat, pretty eggplants.

Some other highlights have included fantastic yogurt, focaccia, spices, jelly, and goat milk moisturizing cream(!)

The summer subscription for the CSA is ending soon, and it’s time to sign up for the fall period (roughly October-November.) I asked Maude tonight and she said there’s a waiting list for fall, but there’s a chance a spot will open up, so I recommend sending her a note and seeing about getting in on the fun.

Even if you don’t get in on the CSA, I urge you to go visit the market. It’s a darling little space, with really interesting (all local) products. Go! See it!

Craft-O-Matic this Saturday!

I haven't been able to take a ton of pictures lately, or to catch up with a backlog of photos I've taken that I haven't really looked through yet. Nothing gets me working like a deadline of some sort, however, so I have printed a bunch of photos (example above) — heretofore only seen by me — for Craft-O-Matic, an indie craft sale this Saturday, June 4 at the Regional Arts Commission on Delmar in the East Loop.

There will be work for sale by dozens of artists and crafters (see some previews here). I can't wait to see what everyone has made. It's a one-day-only event, don't miss your chance to take a peek!

Art + Food = True Yum Forever

A little while back I got a request from the Missouri Coalition for the Environment to use one of my photos in their upcoming cookbook. Naturally, I said yes.

I sent over this one, which was also in the Earthworks exhibit the Coalition had a couple of years ago:

Anyway, the cookbook's out now, and it's beautiful. I'm a big cookbook and recipe fan, thus I have seen a lot of variations on the same themes over time. I have to declare this one a super duper winner.

I am solidly omnivorous, although I have a lot of vegetarian cookbooks and aspire to more of a plant-based diet than I have got now. Don't tell anyone, but sometimes I've found vegetarian recipes — even/especially in the big-name best-selling cookbooks — to sound a little uninteresting. That is highly not a problem with this pretty pretty book. There are so many recipes in there I want to try! Most of them come with a little introduction/explanation from the person who submitted it, which is way cool, especially since at least a couple are from friends old and new.

(Promise I'm not getting paid — in fact the whole point of the cookbook is to raise money for the Coalition's good works — I just really really like this book. Brilliantly done.)

Another sweet weekend on Cherokee Street

Have I mentioned how much I like Cherokee Street? Well, I do.

Every time I spend time on Cherokee I'm reminded of how many wonderful people and places are there.

This weekend I had occasion to hit a few spots. Saturday I went to a poetry reading at the Firecracker Press. Tony Renner and Steve Schroeder read from their work, while Eric Woods of Firecracker cranked out letterpress broadsides of their poems. These things (the poems and the posters) are so cool! Keep an eye out for the next poetry readings in the series at Firecracker. Such a great idea.

Afterward had a late lunch at the always-delicious La Vallesana. It has expanded its outdoor patio/dining area lately but it's still as yummy as ever. Hibiscus agua fresca might be my new favorite drink.

Sunday I finally got an opportunity to stop by the recently opened St. Louis Curio Shoppe, at 2301 Cherokee Street. Kristin and Kristin, the sweet and funny owners, are stocking St. Louis-related products of all kinds: books about the history of gangs in St. Louis, peanut butter made locally, Fitz's soda, Coral Courts keychains, jewelry by local designers, eco-friendly cleaning products, beautiful wood cutting boards ... you name it, it's there. (Oh, also they are being kind enough to carry some of my St. Louis photos for sale.)

The shop is incredibly cute. I want to buy everything in there. You will too, once you visit. Which you should do soon.

No man is an island

Ever since I learned last week of the closing of Globe Drugs on Cherokee Street, I have had the hardest time formulating words to go with my thoughts. My feelings about this are so visceral that I really don't have any coherent words for them.

But since the timing of my show at Urban Eats of photos from Globe Drugs happens to coincide so terribly with the closing of the store, I feel like I should say something. The elephant in the room and all that.

Earlier this spring when I was planning out my rotation at Urban Eats I had no idea what was in store for Globe. I've loved that place for ages, and was really excited when Sandy Cohen, whose family has owned and operated Globe Drugs in St. Louis since the 1930s, invited me to come take photos in the store.

I have taken numerous photos of the outside of the store over the years, so getting a chance to get in and document some of the eye candy inside was just too good to pass up. One day in March I took Sandy up on his invitation and snapped photos for hours.* The folks working there could not have been more gracious and helpful. I bought some adorable little Easter purses for my nieces (and perhaps a bottle of wine or two). This did not feel like a last hurrah.

But things got busy over these last few months of actually getting my Urban Eats shows together and I haven't made it back to the store since.

At the beginning of June I hung up the Globe Drugs show at Urban Eats, and as it's the biggest single project I've done thus far, I was** pretty nervous about it. I really wanted it to be good. Not really for me, exactly, but because Globe has been such an important part of the community for so long that I wanted to be sure that what I was presenting was an adequate tribute to it.

I just love that place.

So when I read last week of the closing of the Cherokee Street store, I felt like I'd been socked in the gut. I have this thing about buildings -- they are frequently interesting to look at and often beautifully crafted; more importantly, they generally have had many people pass through them, been shelter to so many people's histories and dreams.

Even more than homes, buildings that housed institutions -- schools, hospitals, houses of worship, stores -- are especially fascinating to me. So many people have passed through them, so many people have memories -- good and bad, happy and sad -- associated with them. They are like repositories of the ghosts of our collective histories. There is something even more poignant and gut-wrenching to me when these institutions are lost.

John Donne said "any man's death diminishes me". For me this is in some ways felt a hundred fold for the demise of places like Globe on Cherokee. It will be so so missed.***

I never in a million years would have dreamed this show would be a goodbye to the store, and can't say how sad I am that it is.

I'm so sad about this. I had no idea anything was amiss, and just got finished posting announcements and press releases about my show tonight when somebody on Facebook noted that it would be a "eulogy".

Crap. Really heartbroken for Globe, for Cherokee Street, for St. Louis.

Globe Drugs photo show at Urban Eats

It's not really a big secret that I love Cherokee Street. So much to see. And do. And eat. And buy.

A mainstay on Cherokee Street -- since forever -- is Globe Drugs. It's way more than a pharmacy. It's what I would consider to be a classic variety store. You need a needle and thread? You will find it here. Have to pick up some wine on the way to a party? It's here (and cheap!) How about a board game for the kids? A box of pudding mix? A dream catcher? Check, check, check.

There are all kinds of seasonal goods, too -- shelves full of stuffed toy bunnies at Easter, rockin' Santas at Christmas, etc.

It's super colorful, just like Cherokee Street itself. Most of the signs announcing sales are hand-written on construction paper and -- at this particular point in time, when we're all eThis and iThat, I just find that so charming.

Several months ago the folks at Globe Drugs were kind enough to let me come in their store and take some photos. It took a little bit of nerve for me to screw up the courage to ask to do it, and they could not have been nicer about it. I tried to come at an off-peak time, so I wouldn't get in the way, so most of the photos I shot do not feature people, although Globe does a brisk business.

Also, because I have a bit of a fixation on (to paraphrase my artist's statement) things that are rarely seen or are disappearing, my eye was particularly drawn to those elements of the store that have a yesteryear sort of feel. Signs that just look so fantastic and so then. I'm so glad that Globe has preserved these fixtures* -- it's trite to say they don't make them like they used to but it's trite and true.

Also also, it has been noted by others in the past that my photos often have a vintage feel. That's intentional, in some cases, and in some cases that's just how things turned out, given lighting, etc. With these photos I have emphasized the vintage color palette -- with some washed-out colors, black and whites, etc. I want to assure you that much like Kansas is in color -- not black and white, as The Wizard of Oz would have you believe -- in person, Globe Drugs is vibrant and bright. Go take a look!

On Tuesday I finished hanging the last show of my Urban Eats rotation, called (deep breath) "Upstairs, Downstairs, Inside and Out: A Visit to Globe Drugs". This is I think the first time that I've really set out to do a cohesive project like this, and I've got a few butterflies in my tummy about it. I hope I did the place justice.

The show will be up throughout the month of June. The come-see-the-artist event for it is Saturday, June 19, from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. Urban Eats will have food and drink for sale. Please come see me!

*and some fixtures of other places that used to occupy the same building, like a 905 liquor store and a bowling alley!

I know you've been waiting for the exciting conclusion to my blog post from the other day. What's that you say? What post from the other day? Why, the post about me getting out to galleries last weekend. This post!

After leaving the Cherokee Street galleries, I headed to midtown to see Urban Alchemy, the Gordon Matta-Clark show at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts. Which I've been meaning to see for, like, ever. Why didn't I go before now? I'm a dummy, that's why. Don't make the same mistake I did!

I don't know how to explain the show well but I can pluck a phrase from the Pulitzer's site about it that I think captures it nicely: "lost interventions". It's films and photographs -- and, perhaps most strikingly, pieces -- of buildings that are decaying, in the process of being demolished. Which now, of course, are long gone (Matta-Clark died in the 1970s). It's really moving and beautiful. It closes on June 6. Please don't miss it!

The Pulitzer did quite a bit of outreach related to the exhibit. One related project is an exhibit across the street from the Pulitzer, at the Bruno David Gallery --THEASTER GATES: Dry Bones and Other Parables from the North. It.is.beautiful. Go see it! I mean it this time!

Again, I don't really have an extensive art vocabulary, but it's just a wonderful show. Paintings that are so familiar, somehow, even though I'd never seen them before (see especially "hopeful commerce, mixed use dwelling"). The exhibit was curated by Juan William Chavez, of Boots Contemporary Art Space, on Cherokee.

The Theaster Gates show closes on June 5. Hurry!

Finally, crossed back to the other side of the street to the Contemporary Art Museum, to take a look at the Great Rivers Biennial show, featuring work by Martin Brief, Sarah Frost, and Cameron Fuller: Super interesting and provocative (in the best way) and beautifully displayed.

I had never been to the Contemporary before. It was Free Family Day, and kids were making instruments from recycled materials and print making and running around and generally having a grand time. The Great Rivers Biennial is open for a couple more months, but come on, just visit all three galleries in one afternoon, and soon! Simply a wonderful way to spend the day.

Couldn't take photos in any of the above places, but did take one of the courtyard of the Contemporary. Doesn't that look like a perfect place to sit and think (or not think)?

"Right this instant" event this Sunday at Urban Eats

Yesterday I knocked over what seemed like an entire bucket of salsa in my refrigerator -- what a great opportunity to clean out the fridge! (Sometimes I need a little salsa crisis to spur me into action.)

What worried me the most about this was the stockpile of Polaroid film I've got chillin' like Bob Dylan in there.

Polaroid Corporation stopped manufacturing film several years ago, so as each type that I use was being phased out, I bought up as much as I could. I try to save it mostly for things that I know will be well-suited for the medium -- some of the colors of one type really lend themselves to intense skies, for instance. And type 669 is used for Polaroid transfers (see example above. See more about the process here.)

I think I got the Polaroid boxes cleaned up quickly enough that there will be no lasting salsa scars, but I was a little wistful when I saw how small my pile of Polaroid film is getting. It won't last forever, even in the refrigerator, so I put some of it to use recently in preparation for my current show at Urban Eats, "Right this instant". I've got traditional Polaroid photos in the show, as well as Polaroid transfers and emulsion lifts, and Holgaroids, photos made with a Holga camera with a Polaroid back.

The show is hanging up throughout May, and I'll be at Urban Eats this Sunday, May 23, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Come say "hi"! (There will be food and drinks for sale in the cafe. Arty arty art art on Cherokee

I don't get out enough -- despite trying to keep track of art-related goings-on on Cherokee Street for my other blog, one project or obligation or another always seems to get in the way of my actually going to the goings-on.

But today I was all "to hell with it, I'm going to go look at art". Lucky for me Snowflake was open this afternoon, so I got to see the super show there right now, which is recent work by Clint Baclawski (photographs) and Caleb Taylor. (Along with Gabriel Slavitt's installation at Drive-By.

It probably goes without saying that photographic work gets my attention, and Clint Baclawski's lightbox photos are really exceptional. Make time to go see these if you can. All three artists have done some impressive work. The show is up until June 6. Snowflake has open hours on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Location information below. Then I hopped across the street because I noticed that Fort Gondo was open. There I found "Marks of Absence", works by Lily Cox-Richard and Lori Larusso (Caleb Cole has a companion exhibition at Good Citizen Gallery on Gravois.) More information on all three artists and their work can be found here.

I lucked out seeing this show -- both artists at Fort Gondo really put up fabulous pieces. I'll have to try to make it by Good Citizen to see Caleb Cole's work soon. (Sculptures are Lily Cox-Richard's and shaped panel acrylic paintings are by Lori Larusso.) Go see these! This show will also be up until June 6. 'Roid Week + 'Roid Month

Over the weekend I put up my new show at Urban Eats, "Right this instant", which features images I've made with Polaroid film.

You might have heard that Polaroid film has been discontinued. It has been, for the most part, although Fuji still manufactures some instant film, and there is a new project that is bringing back some of the integral Polaroid films.

Unfortunately there don't seem to be any plans to revive Type 89 film, which was just about my favorite. Its vivid colors are a great match for the wacky Holga camera -- when they're paired together there's no telling what they'll come up with. The photo above was taken with my Holgaroid (as the Frankenstein-ish combination of the Holga with a Polaroid back is affectionately known.) I've got a little bit of the film left, stored in ~~my fridge~~ a vault under heavy surveillance.

I only get it out for special projects now, onaccounta I don't have much left. When I decided to do the Urban Eats shows, I knew I had to get a photo of this building with the Holgaroid. I pass it every day on my way to work and always mean to snap a photo. It's so so so blue. Finally on a day that the skies were looking extra sky-ish I remembered to pack the Holgaroid and took this.

It was hanging in Urban Eats in my last show ("Sign Language") and it's still there (although not in a starring role) for the May show.

Anyway.

We are in the midst of 'Roid Week 2010. This is an unofficial celebration of Polaroid film on Flickr (and elsewhere? not sure), so I'm busting out some recent Polaroids, which are on my mind due to working with them a lot in the past few weeks for "Right this instant".

My artist's reception for "Right this instant" is Sunday, May 23, 11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Come grab a bite to eat and say "hello"!

Urban Eats shows

My first event at Urban Eats is this Sunday, April 25, 11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. There will be food and drink for sale in the cafe side, and art for looking at in the Urban Arts Collective side (enter through the cafe.) My show this month is "Sign language", photographs I've been taking of signs over the last few years. (And while you're there check out work from Angie Griffith, UMSL's PPRC Project, Thomas Shepherd, and Naomi Silver.)

A week after this event the sign show comes down and up goes the May show, "Right this instant", which will be a collection of images I've made with Polaroid film. The Polaroids will be up all throughout the month of May at Urban Eats, with the meet-the-artist event on Sunday, May 23, 11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

And in June I will put up my final show at Urban Eats — the theme is still being ironed out, but it will more than likely include at least a few photos of Globe Drugs, on my beloved Cherokee Street.

So the photo above really fits with all three shows ... I knows what I loves, and I loves that sign.

"Sign Language" show at Urban Eats

I hung up my first show at Urban Eats this past weekend. I've got a lot of new work in it. There are matted photos and postcards for sale, in addition to the framed pieces* that are hanging. I'm very excited about this show and the other artists' work as well. (Download a flyer here for information on the other artists.)

The show will be hanging throughout April, after which we will rotate in our next shows for May.**

I am having a come-see-me event on Sunday, April 25, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Urban Eats will have tasty food and drinks for sale. So come have br/lunch and say hello!

I certainly think signs are super interesting to look at even when I am not absorbing what it is they are trying to convey to me.

There are so many signs visible at this corner that I almost don't know where to look; no matter, it's the greater whole that draws me in.

I have a show next month Urban Eats Cafe in south St. Louis on Meramec Street. Have you been? They have drinks called boozies. That's smoothies + booze. What more could you need to know?

Back to the show: It's called "Sign Language". I will have photos of signs. All kinds. Little, big. Metal, neon. Maybe even paper. Man, there will be some materials that I haven't even mentioned yet, I'll bet. You don't want to miss this!

I don't know if this photo will be in the show yet. You'll have to come see. The show is going to be full of all kinds of crazy surprises like that.

back to life for black and white

I loved my old camera. I took some of my favorite photos with it. It did well with closeups, and its black and white setting was just so nice (neither are qualities shared with my current camera, even though it does other things very nicely.)

It began having troubles a couple of years ago and only worked sporadically. The viewfinder kept going out and that just wouldn't do. So I replaced it with the new guy and have rarely had occasion to pick it up since then.

Yesterday I was looking at the light as it came in the window and the way it was gently highlighting the plants above my bed and I wanted to capture it so I tried to fire up the old camera because it seemed like a shot that was perfect for it -- something that needed a little close-up detail, and that I was envisioning in black and white.

At first the camera didn't work but I tried different batteries and jostling this and tugging on that and it finally kicked into gear and took the photo above. I am happy to have it revived; it's like an old friend I've been missing.

Out and about

I've not been so great about taking pictures for some time but I'm making an effort to do it even when I think I don't have time or don't have any ideas, etc. After I do it, I'm always glad I did.

Last weekend I went out to take some photos for an upcoming show at Urban Eats Cafe*. The first show will be mostly pictures of signs, so this is more of an outtake than something I'll use, but it just seemed to south St. Louis to me and also felt like pictures I used to take a couple of years ago and I sort of miss those pictures and anyway....

Doctors Without Borders benefit at the Sheldon

Tomorrow evening, Tuesday, February 9, 2010, St. Louis Musicians for Haiti will put on a benefit concert at the beautiful and acoustically perfect Sheldon Concert Hall.

The bad news is that the show is sold-out -- no more tickets available. The good news is that the show is sold-out -- more money going to support Doctors Without Borders. The other good news is that the show will be televised on HEC-TV at 7:30 p.m.; it will also be shown on the HEC-TV web site.

Aside from the ticket sales' proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders, there will also be a silent auction of donated artwork. A framed print of my photo Fresh, above, will be awaiting bids -- if you were lucky enough to score a ticket to the event, please show it (and, by extension, Doctors Without Borders) some love!

Strutting around like a peacock

If you see me strutting about town with this purse over my shoulder, stop and admire.

I have mentioned here before that more than photography, I love sewing. I'm not the world's most gifted seamstress, but I don't let that deter me. I keep on keeping on, although everything I try takes about six times longer than it should, and never quite works out just right in the end.

But being able to make something practical, that I can use, is just such a thrill (I thrill easily, apparently).

The purse above is from a pattern designed by Amy Butler, and the primary fabric is hers as well. I've been wanting a huge purse that will fit my big old heavy camera when I want to have it on my person, and this one will fit the bill. Maybe that means I'll take more photos, now that it's easier to carry my camera with me.

Last weekend I finished this little lap quilt I made my aunt for her birthday. She always feels cold so here's hoping it will warm her up a bit. I sort of made the quilt's design up as I went along and might tweak a thing or two, but I think it's possible I'll return to the basic idea at some point in the future. With the lessons learned and all that.

The value of using the good stuff

You know what's fun? Making Polaroid transfers. In a nutshell, it involves taking a photo (or copying another image) using Polaroid peel-apart film. And then prematurely separating the negative and positive of the Polaroid and using the negative of the Polaroid film to transfer the image onto another surface. Many people use watercolor paper as the transfer surface.

I'm enchanted with the process, but it takes a number of different steps and there are variables -- wet or dry paper, how warm to keep the paper while it's developing, how much time to allow the film to develop before separating it, etc. I've experimented with a lot of different ways of doing things and it's always educational, even if I don't get something I like.

A few months ago I was out of watercolor paper, so I bought a different type of paper from what I had used previously. It was sort of environmentally friendly paper, which was a plus.

So a few weeks ago I got out all my Polaroid-transfer-making equipment to make a batch of transfers and ack! Everything I got was awful awful awful. This made me a little sad because no matter what variables I experimented with, they all looked terrible. Such as this guy:

Then I got a notice that a local art supply store was having a sale on Arches watercolor paper, which is sort of the gold standard of watercolor paper. It's beautifully made and has been made beautifully for something ridiculous like 600 years and it's what I'd been using prior to my other watercolor paper experiment.

That's more like it.

Indie Fixx Galleria

Do you know Indie Fixx? It's a nifty blog on living an indie life -- in addition to featuring independent businesses, Jen, the blog's editor, provides her readers with free downloadable artwork, project tutorials, and more.

Another component of Indie Fixx is its Galleria, which can best be described as an online shopping place for handmade, indie-made and vintage goods, "Think of it as an 'indie mall' featuring a juried mix of designers & boutiques to provide a curated shopping experience", says the site.

And I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the Indie Fixx Galleria's next rotation, which will run January 15-February 26. Yay!

In honor of this ... honor, I will be listing new items (such as the photo above) in my Etsy shop for the next few days (and likely throughout my stay at the Galleria.) Let it snow

When I was a kid (and perhaps since I've been an adult) I used to do some mental bargaining when there was a chance of snow: "if we get a snow day I will totally do the studying I didn't do tonight", "if we get a snow day I will clean up my room", etc. Sometimes that works, usually doesn't.

Anyway: word on the street is that there might be a snow day tomorrow.

For a while I've been meaning to work on making some Polaroid transfers, which I haven't done in some time. So tonight I'm bargaining that if we get a snow day tomorrow, I will make something.

It might not be a Polaroid transfer right now (although I did get a pack of film out of the fridge, so the easy part is out of the way), but it's possible I'll finish cutting the fabric for a purse I'm making, or that I will go through Thanksgiving and Christmas family photos and get them uploaded somewhere.

Baking chocolate chip cookies counts as making something, in my estimation, so that might be the ticket.

If we get that snow day.

Indie arts & craft show this weekend at Mad Art Gallery

For the second half of November I spent a good amount of time going through photos I took over the past year. Occasionally -- especially when I'm traveling -- I take maybe a few hundred photos and going through all of them takes some time and isn't as fun as getting out with my camera.

Having not taken a lot of photos in the last few months and spending a little more time at home lately kicked me into gear to get cracking on some of this year's photos -- many of them taken in South Carolina and Kansas this summer.

Also: I'm in the Bigass Indie Art & Craft Show this weekend at Mad Art Gallery in Soulard, and I like to bring some new work when I do a show like this.

Missouri

I hate the term "fly-over country". It's so stupid. As if all this land is just a buffer between the coasts. The coasts are plenty interesting and obviously they have their fans but man there is some interesting stuff here in the middle.

I find Missouri to be particularly interesting, probably because I've seen more of it than I've seen anyplace else. Yet there's so much I haven't seen. I'll get to it.

This sign makes my heart sing every time I see it. All the words, all together. The different script styles. The colors. It's so -- not sure if optimistic is the word I'm looking for, but something that is an antonym of cynical would capture my meaning.

I made a commitment to myself that I would list a new item on Etsy every night for a week. I've been sort of behind on my photo-taking lately, and also way behind on going through photos I've taken in the last six months or so to see what I have. I've got a show coming up next weekend* and wanted to produce some new material for it, and just generally get back in the photo-taking-and-making saddle.

I've passed by this sign eleventy thousand times and photographed it many of those times, but haven't gotten a picture of it that really let it be a star**. Found this one in my recent investigations into what pictures I took this summer and fall, and here it is. Seemed a fitting capstone to my new-listing project as it's been sort of an ongoing project for me to get this thing how I wanted it.

best intentions

I was at the grocery store today and I heard a little squeal and this woman asked about my earrings as she'd just made some earrings that were meant to be hamburgers and she thought mine looked like food and she's absolutely not the first person to tell me that about this particular pair of earrings. Her companion agreed, and at least two other people have independently told me that my earrings look like food.

They don't look anything like food to me. I generally don't attempt novelty jewelry creations unless it's for a kid or something, so I was/am sort of thrown off that what I thought was an interesting configuration of shapes looks like food to others. It wasn't meant to be anything in particular!

Nobody who has commented on their foodly appearance has disliked them. So I guess insofar as jewelry/art/etc. is meant to please people, they have done their job. But they're sending a message, and one that I didn't intend, and that's ... disconcerting is too strong of a word. But some milder form of disconcerting might fit.

This interaction today brought me back to a notion that cycles around in my head not infrequently. Of the photos I've taken -- and made public in some form or another -- those that I love the very best, those that turned out just as I'd hoped or even better, those that I think are exactly what I meant to "say", most don't seem to resonate strongly with anybody but me.

I want to be clear that this isn't a "please admire my photos" fishing expedition -- I have come to accept that some people really like some of my photos. But insofar as anything of mine is "popular"*, those photos aren't generally ones that I feel particularly reflect my style.

This one at the top of the page here? For sure in my personal top 10 of work that I think says "Hilary". I spent more than a little bit figuring out this composition, and I got it just as I wanted it and this is the photo I meant to take.

A few months ago a friend was looking through my photos and came across this one and said something about how this photo was frustrating because he wanted to see the whole sign and there was this stuff in the way and what I should have done was just take a picture of the whole sign.

This friend never says things just to be nice, and gives useful feedback that I don't get from a lot of other people, so it was interesting to hear that perspective**. It didn't hurt my feelings, because I know I got what I wanted and did what I intended to do.

It makes me wonder about others' work; if that's a common experience -- your personal favorites of your own work never really matching up with what others tend to be drawn to. Would love to hear thoughts on this (and see your personal favorites!)

I'm not really out-with-the-olding much. But I am determined to produce some new work right now -- or at least post more stuff that has only been seen by me up to this point.

Have made a pledge to myself to post something new on Etsy every day this week. Here's the first -- I make most of my own prints because I want to know that the prints will be as I intended the photo to look. But on occasion I try something new, and I had a slew of photos professionally printed recently on metallic paper. The effect is odd and interesting and I really like it.

I don't think it will work with just any image, but I've been really pleased with how the ones I've chosen have turned out. Including this one. Find it on Etsy here.

Hie thee to Paste

I have posted before about Paste, the new art and craft supply store in Soulard.

I was able to preview it a bit when I brought some of my photos there for sale a couple of months ago. (I can't believe it's been that long already.) But the summer was packed and I hadn't gotten back there to shop until a couple of weeks ago.

Love this place! Beads and ribbon and yarn and stamps and beads and photographs and beads and I am a sucker for beads, especially.

Much as I was super excited when City Art Supply opened up in my neighborhood -- an art supply store in the city! -- I am also excited that Paste has made a home in the city.

It's been a while since there's been a great spot for craft supplies in the city of St. Louis. Plus, it's nice when the folks who open these stores have a love for and knowledge about what they are selling, and even cooler when they are supportive of local artists, both of which are true about both Paste and City Art Supply.

So: go check these folks out! Spend money with them so we can keep them in business and keep them in the city! And while you're at Paste, you'll see some of my photos for sale (no pressure, I swear!)

St. Louis Through the Lens

Aren't my nieces cute? When my little sister (their aunt) got married two years ago, we -- the wedding party -- traveled around town to various spots to take photos. The wedding photographer did a phenomenal job. I got a few photos off to the side when we weren't "on". Like this one.

This photo was accepted as a finalist (yay!) into this year's Irv Schankman Memorial Photography Contest, St. Louis Through the Lens.

The exhibition is intended to promote work by regional photographers and features the city of St. Louis as its subject. The jurors for the competition are Ellen Curlee, Olivia Lahs-Gonzales, and Bob Little.

In addition to the juried exhibition there will be a selected exhibition of work by Irv Schankman. Irv Schankman (1924-2004) was a professional photographer and the founder of Allied Photocolor and Imaging Center. His love of documenting St. Louis began as soon as he picked up his first camera in the 6th grade. In his junior year of high school he made his way through police lines to shoot an emblazoned gasoline storage facility. These photographs, which appeared in St. Louis’s Star Times as dramatic silhouettes, marked the beginning of his professional career.

The exhibit runs September 10-December 5, 2009 at Gallery 210 on the campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The opening reception and announcement of awards is this Thursday, September 10 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Come!

The other night my awesome neighbor Maggie brought me a sample of these delicious chocolate cherry tomatoes from her family's garden. So.good. I had to place an order for more today as I ate up my sample real quick-like.

I like to buy local produce in season when I can, but I am not always so good at getting out to the farmers' markets and don't love going to the grocery store, so I don't manage to do this as much as I should in the summer.

So, yay yay yay for local being grown-across-the-street local. Right here in Gravois Park!

I am not quite up-to-date on photos from my recent activities, but these were so lovely and delicious I had to sing their praises right away.

Off to Charleston, SC for a few days to visit with family and celebrate my mom's birthday. Charleston is full of treats for the eyes, so I expect to overtax my hard drive with new photos when I get back.

Sedalia-bound

Heading to Sedalia, Missouri this weekend to drop off this photo for the Missouri 50 Exhibition at the Missouri State Fair. I'm really honored to have had my work accepted into this for a second time; I've enjoyed visiting the exhibit each year and seeing all the artwork from across the state.

The fair runs August 13-23, 2009. You should go! There's a lot to do and see there.

Plus? Sedalia is home of the Guber Burger. Do.not.miss.it.

Little pink houses

The Bigass Indie Art and Craft Show is over and I've got everything back in my house but boy is it a mess. Need to sort through all the odds and ends and get everything back in its place.

In anticipation of the show I made a bunch of prints of photos I'd never printed before. I'll be listing some of those in my Etsy shop in the coming weeks.

This one, Viola, just went up tonight. The listing is here.

It's a photo on my grandparents' farm in Kansas. The house in the front was the house when I was little. At some point they acquired the house behind it and painted it pink to match the main house. It's named The Little House and it was a studio for my grandparents -- Grandma painted, Grandpa was a photographer.

Years later they added another house (not pictured) to the bunch, and painted it pink, too. It's known as The Shop -- my uncle has various fix-it projects in there, as well as antiques that he sells.

Indie craft show this weekend

I took this photo during my Chain-of-Rocks-Bridge-in-the-Rain mis/adventures a couple of months ago. And I developed the film. And yes, I am going to think developing film is the coolest thing I've done for, like, ever.

The photo will be making its debut at the Big Ass Indie Art & Craft Show this weekend at Mad Art Gallery. I just printed it for the first time the other night and it turned out just how I wanted it to and generally that doesn't happen for me on the first try (especially with film!) so I am especially pleased.

The show should be fun. There was one right before Christmas last year that was just great. The way everything was displayed, the things everybody made. Friday evening will have entertainment to go along with the shopping. Says Mad Art:

Extraordinary photos of St. Louis

Sometimes I feel like I've seen most of St. Louis at one time or another -- if not every square inch, then another square inch that's quite similar. I mean, the city proper is less than 67 square miles.

But yesterday I saw a link to this unusual photo project that had the participants throwing darts at a map and then visiting the actual spot where the dart landed, and taking photographs on that block. It turns out there's a lot of St. Louis I haven't seen. Streets I've never heard of -- and I thought I'd heard of them all!

Final photo class was last night. I mostly just developed some photos from my friends' wedding last week. Never did get into the darkroom to make prints, as I suspected I mightn't. Maybe I'll take the class again in the Fall to learn that component.

This is from my Sunday-morning outing to Cherokee Street a few weeks ago. Even when there is almost nobody out, it's surprising how many people want to chat you up when you've got a camera! Within about 10 minutes I got three questions about what I was doing ("are you going to buy that place?", "did you photograph my house up the street?", "did you see that one building -- you know the one -- up the street?") I was feeling a little shy about that so I didn't last too long that morning.

Last film class eve

My last film-development class is Tuesday night and I've still not made any prints. I shot some film at my friends' wedding the other night, I would love to at least get that developed tomorrow night. Looks like I might have to take the class again to learn to make prints.

I don't want to wait until Fall to keep developing! I really like doing this. Have been pricing the minimum equipment/chemicals I'd need to do this at home. Not sure that I need one more bunch of art supplies to have to wade through, my house is not all that big. But I am fairly weak-willed when it comes to art/craft supplies. Stay tuned....

I developed this photo last night. It's another one from my Chain of Rocks Bridge misadventure the week before last.

One of the main reasons why I wanted to learn to develop film was so that I could develop 120 (medium format) film, which is what I use in my Holgas and Diana. And now I've developed my first roll, this one, last night.

I've still got a lot to do to feel like I'm comfortable doing this, and the class is more than half over and I haven't begun to think about making prints yet, but I'm having a great time doing what I'm doing and seeing what I get.

Just about my favorite place in St. Louis right now is Cherokee Street. Besides City Museum. And all my other favorite places. But really, I love it. A lot of cool stuff going on and it just keeps getting better. In fact, did you know I have another blog? Well, I do. Trying to keep track of all the art-related goings-on on Cherokee. Because there are a lot. Galleries, art supplies, music, dancing, theater, etc. Here's that blog, should you ever want to take a peek.

I need to take some more film for my developing class Tuesday, so I'm packing up the cameras to go take some on Cherokee right now. Sometimes I feel awkward taking photos when there are a lot of people around. Despite ... well, everything about me, I don't always love attention. So my hope is early-ish (for me, anyway!) on a Sunday morning it will be pretty empty over there. We'll see.

The photo above was taken from the upstairs of Foam. Don't they have a great view? I can't wait until that place opens. I think I read a rumor there may be something brewing (I swear this was an unintentional pun) sometime this summer. The photo was shot on Ilford Delta film on my Canon AE-1.

3, 2, 1 & Chain of Rocks

You know how people will do the dumbest things for love? Well, I'd never do that. That's dumb.

I will, however, do dumb things for photographs! Boy howdy.

I needed to finish a roll of film for my film developing class this past Tuesday.

On Sunday I awoke to light rain outside. Looked at the radar, thought it looked like it was going to clear up for a good while, drove to the Chain of Rocks Bridge, which is an old alignment of Route 66, now a pedestrian and bicycle bridge. I got about 2/3 of a mile onto the bridge when the skies opened up and the rain began to pour.

But I got like four photos -- including this one above, so you know, totally worth it. And -- this is from the very first roll of film I've ever developed. Hooray! I've done it!

Last night I finally developed a roll of film! All things considered, it could have gone worse. I would like to do at least a couple few more before I feel like I've sort of got the hang of it. Haven't made any prints yet, but maybe next time.

The film developing class I've been wanting to take has really started this time. Last night a couple of other students and I began a 5-week black-and-white-film-developing class. I have whined about doing this for some time, so I'm really excited to have begun.

The photo above is from one of the rolls I shot for the class, on Kodak Tri-X film, with one of my Canon AE-1s. I have bought several different kinds of film and am nerdily keeping track of which photos I shot with which film (and which camera) so if/when I hit upon something I really like I'll find a formula I can stick with.

I must confess that I didn't actually develop the film myself. The instructor used the rolls I shot to demonstrate the process of developing film. But I watched! I was standing right there! I asked many many questions! I hope to develop a roll or two next week, and then get to printing some at some point.

Darkroom class: a whole brand new one

Okay, I believe I'm starting film developing class next week, for real this time. Yay!

Got to talk to the instructor on the phone last night and she said I could bring 120 film in addition to 35mm, which is great because I love to take photos with my medium format "toy" cameras (Holga and Diana) and I've not been delighted with any of the prints I've gotten so far from when I've sent that film out to be developed and so now I can try my hand and it and see if I can get something a little more like what I had in mind.

The above was shot with the Diana at Bellefontaine Cemetery in North St. Louis, at the grave of General William Clark (as in Lewis &...), double-exposed with Louis Sullivan's masterpiece Wainwright tomb.

Cherokee Open House report

I've been neglectful about saying how much I enjoyed the Cherokee Street Open House.

It was a beautiful day and I was really pleased with the turnout. Loads of people came by -- and why wouldn't they? Foam is such an attractive spot and such great care is going into it that I know everyone is as eager to see it open as I am. Pretty sure it will be open for business sometime this summer. Stay tuned!

What I love more than taking photographs is sewing. I intend to bring these together in my work at some point when I come up with a clever idea for doing it.

About a year ago I decided to make a quilt. It's a t-shirt quilt, inspired by a book written by Cathy Cano-Murillo, the Crafty Chica. I got a bunch of cute or funny or whatnot t-shirts from a thrift store, and chose other fabrics to go with the t-shirt panels. Measure measure, cut cut.

As I'm pretty new to sewing, it took forever to assemble this thing. But I finally finished it sometime in the Fall, I think. Ever since then I meant to make some shams to match the quilt but one project or another kept me from doing that and a couple of weeks ago I decided to just get it done. I finished them this morning and whew! I can clean a few sewing things off the dining room table so I can get to getting some photos ready for next week's show.

What have you been making? (Or what would you like to make if you had the time, space, etc.?)

Turns out that the blank roll of film was NO problem, because my film developing class, which was supposed to begin tonight, has been canceled. So now I've got to come up with a new plan to learn the process. More than a few folks have told me that it's fairly easy, but I'm more of a learn-by-doing than a learn-by-reading type, so I was hoping to have the chance to try it out with instruction a few times before I attempted to tackle it on my own. Anyone local who has ideas on somewhere else to take a course in this?

The photo above is one of the handful of digital photos I took on Saturday's excursion. The Knotty Pine Inn and Motel is in Breese, Illinois, on Old Route 50. I had fried chicken there.

Oh, before I forget!: I am super excited to be participating in the Cherokee Street Open House on Saturday, April 4. Mike from Foam* has generously offered to let me have some photos on display the day of the open house. My first solo show! Yay!

I've signed up for the black and white film development classes that I mentioned in this entry. Yay! Thanks again to my friend Darren for inspiring me to finally take action.

Classes start this Tuesday. I get all nervous when I think school, so I'm hoping that this isn't going to be as school-y as regular school.

Not sure how quickly we're going to be getting into the darkroom -- this is a five-week class -- but I thought I'd better get a couple of rolls of black and white film shot first before class starts in case we are supposed to be developing right away.

I haven't had occasion to really get out of St. Louis much lately, so I decided to take a drive on US-50 in Illinois yesterday. I take US-50 in Missouri every chance I get, because it is way more pleasant than the the major highways, and it's got a lot of charm. But I haven't been on it on Illinois much, if ever.

Yesterday seemed like the perfect day to get in the car and do some exploring in Illinois. Fill up a roll or two of film. Win-win. I saw some neat places! Got a whole roll of film filled! Snapped a few digitals and Holgaroids too, but my main focus (haha) was on getting some black and white photos.

Except. When I got home last night, all happy to have gotten some shots that I felt pretty good about, I went to rewind the film and. Nothing. It wouldn't rewind. Because as far as I can tell I must have done something wrong in the first place when loading the film and I actually took no photos. Doh!

I guess I'll wait and see what happens when I try to develop the film in class, but I'm not too hopeful on this one.

This is one of the digital photos I took (haven't scanned the Holgaroids yet) of the Avon Theater in Breese, Illinois. Breese is a really cute town -- as were the others I passed through along the way. Will definitely have to make another trip there. And practice my film-loading technique.

I've been thinking about this for a while -- having postcards made of some of my photos. I am accustomed to making my own prints; I get all nervous when I send something out to be printed for any reason. When I make a print I work at it until I am perfectly happy with it. If a color is a little off I make it again and again until it's something I'd be proud to show as my work. I can get a little fussy!

So I sent in one test image for the postcards to see how well I liked the results. I liked it a lot! And had four other images put on postcards. I love them so much I am thinking about which ones I will have made next.

Meet the new boss

I bought this guy last weekend off of Craigslist. Earlier in the week I bought the Polaroid SX-70 off of Craigslist that I used to take this photo of the Canon.

This all started with this photo of my grandpa feeding my dad.

A few weeks ago I was back-and-forthing with my friend Darren on Facebook and he asked about this photo and what a great look it had and we got into a photography discussion and it reminded me that I really want to learn to develop film before the opportunity passes me by.

I sort of came to photography from the wrong direction. Or the right direction. My direction. Anyway, I started with a digital camera and then began to shoot a little film in a Holga and then picked up Polaroids and have a few other film cameras but I've never really learned the fundamentals of photography. Someday I'd like to have a little darkroom but first I need to learn how to develop film.

I see that there are classes in film development at the community college. So I needed to get a camera that would be worth shooting with. I've always liked the looks of this Canon, the AE-1. It's just so handsome.

I've been vaguely poking around eBay and elsewhere for a while, thinking maybe I'd pick one up someday. Conversations with Darren and the community college course schedule arriving in my mailbox just about collided with me getting a tax refund in the mail. Most of that is more than spoken for, but I took a little bit and bought this camera and the SX-70 last week. I got terrific deals on both and I am so so happy about that.

I've been cracking open photography books and magazines, which is a change because my heart's not been in the learning and reading for a little while here and I'm feeling reinvigorated and excited about photography in a way that I've been missing for a bit.

I will be donating a photo to the Missouri Coalition for the Environment's 2009 Earthworks exhibit and auction at the Regional Arts Commission* in the Loop here in St. Louis in May.

I was in this show a couple of years ago and found it to be really cool. So be sure to check it out once it's up!

Still thinking about what photo I'll use. I have a few things in mind. One idea that came to me tonight was one of these photos of celery that I've been working on. In my brain there are reasons why one of these might fit with an environmental theme, but I've not got all the words for it yet.

Polaroids

I took this in my kitchen the other day. With a Polaroid SX-70. A wonderful camera. I only picked one up a while after Polaroid discontinued its film, unfortunately.

You can use (the fairly common) 600 film in it, but it takes a bit of adjustment, and it still lacks the qualities of the original film. And now that Polaroid has discontinued all film production, 600 is becoming harder to find.

Good news for Polaroid may be on the horizon. There are reports that integral* film may come back into production, if The Impossible Project comes to fruition. Yay!

* e.g., 600, SX-70. The kind that the camera spits out in one piece. The "shake it like a Polaroid picture" kind. Pack film -- the two-part kind used in Holgaroids and for Polaroid transfers and emulsion lifts -- is still a goner. For now, at least.

This image isn't in the upcoming Holga Polka Invitational, but it was the inspiration for a piece that I will have in the show.

This is the first time I will be publicly showing any mixed media work and I'm still not sure how successful my experiments were.

Details on the show:

Opening reception Friday, January 9, 2009, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Regional Arts Commission. The exhibition continues through February 22, 2009. A gallery talk will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Reception 6:30 p.m., Talk 7 p.m.

In the age of digital photography, forty-two local artists will take the Holga challenge. Forget about using expensive, technology-laden cameras. The Holga, categorized as a toy camera because it is made of plastic, doesn’t have any bells and whistles. Yet, the Holga has a loyal following dedicated to its signature style of shocking simplicity and unpredictable results.

“The Holga only has one f-stop,” explained Mark A. Fisher, photographer and curator of the Holga Polka Invitational. “The back of the camera might fall off if you don’t tape it on.
