(and a whole bunch of other St. Louis Public Schools — so many gorgeous ones!)

I have been not-so-great at getting out to take photos in recent years. Sometimes I get a whim and take a few hours to get out, but not often enough for my liking.

How's your photo project going? ;)Hilaryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04825422334491926984noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754133426803804987.post-54333256046359038042012-08-21T21:16:03.432-05:002012-08-21T21:16:03.432-05:00Not dense at all!
Will try to keep this short (...Not dense at all!

Will try to keep this short (but I've warned you about my tendency toward verbosity, plus I'm extra-nerdy about Polaroid!):

Polaroid film was discontinued a few years ago. There is a group of people in Europe, called the Impossible Project, who have tried to revive it, and are making certain types of the films again.

The kind I'm using in these photos is pack film, which comes out of the camera with a negative and a positive, and these are separated after a minute or so, with the positive displaying the photo.

The other main type of Polaroid/instant film (that which would have been available in most discount department/drug/etc. stores a few years back) is integral film. It comes out of the camera in one piece (it's the "shake it like a Polaroid picture" kind.)

The Impossible Project is making integral films again. I haven't purchased any (although I'm very tempted!) because it's a little pricey and something else always seems to come up to spirit away my money.

Evidently integral and pack films were made in very different ways, and the Impossible Project has no way of making the pack film again. I have a few packs of it in my fridge still, from before it was discontinued. I don't get them out too often, because when it's gone, it's gone!

(To further confuse/nerdify matters, last I knew, Fuji still made some pack film, although not the right size for my Holgaroid.)

As far as the blue sky: something about the pack film I'm using (Polaroid type 89) really brings out the intensity of colors, and it loves blue skies, so if it's a sunny day with a very blue sky, that's a good day to haul out the Holgaroid! Sadly, it is in disrepair and always makes this City's "Most Endangered List" - so sad. I can think of about 100+ COMMUNITY uses for it if only funds for same were available. Carr School on Carr Street. Check it out - it's an amazing structure with GREAT ROOF LINES, incidentally :-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754133426803804987.post-51027003526958303142012-08-14T17:35:44.726-05:002012-08-14T17:35:44.726-05:00What a neat idea! - Roid Week! But where does ever...What a neat idea! - Roid Week! But where does everyone get their Polaroid film? And if not Polaroid - what other INSTANT film exists? Sorry to be so "dense" but I HATE IT when I don't understand totally COOL things! LoL. The sky is SO BLUE in your pic Hilary! I love the way ...Not even a little tiny bit sorry!

I love the way you're using the camera, and I'd love to see your blog, if you care to share the link.

The issues you raise — the loss of the manufacturing economy in the US, gun violence, missing white woman syndrome — are all particularly troubling to me. I feel so hopeless/powerless about them sometimes.Hilaryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04825422334491926984noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754133426803804987.post-2425484977179214832012-07-30T15:46:18.029-05:002012-07-30T15:46:18.029-05:00I thought (sort of) the same thing: "Help me,...I thought (sort of) the same thing: "Help me, Please!" either because the film is gone rendering the camera obsolete - but, on a larger scale, Kodak is now gone and this particular camera (I'm sure you know this if u own one) has "Made in America" proudly embossed on it. We don't do that anymore so "Help me, Please!" because America is no longer the place where things are made and we need to help of fix that? I dunno.

In the meantime, I have started an "experimental" underground blog about it. Every day I post a column about someone or something "crying out for help, please" that largely goes ignored or overlooked in our society. So I start with me aiming the found disc camera at a problem or issue or societal ill and then drawing attention to it IN WORDS (via a blog post) much like the camera lens would if it could still take a picture. Today's topic is about how I am sick to death of seeing little kids and young kids shot in playgrounds or on their own porches or inside their own homes because there is so much gun violence and stray bullets flying around this City! And IF it is reported at all by local media it is "lost in the news cycle" within 24 hours. Think how many news stories local media did about "the pretty white girl" tragically killed by vehicle hit & run outside of Broadway Oyster Bar. Did you know 3 other fatal, vehicular hit & runs happened in that same 24 hour period here in the bi-state area? But those victims were aged and/or African-American so it wasn't deemed "newsworthy" and all 3 went unreported by local news. These are the things I am using that camera to draw attention to - not that anyone will likely care.

I bet you're sorry you asked, right? LoLAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754133426803804987.post-33596121696113851972012-07-30T14:39:48.546-05:002012-07-30T14:39:48.546-05:00Ooh, how intriguing! I have a disc camera that I got in a box of other old cameras I bought at some point, but I've never used one.

I've heard of people leaving cameras in public in order to see what photos people would take with them (one such project is described here; another here), but without film... Huh!

Maybe the camera is asking for help because it's starving, since there is no more film for it (okay, yeah, still no idea!)

What did you end up doing?Hilaryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04825422334491926984noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754133426803804987.post-62051201227095292032012-07-24T17:58:21.310-05:002012-07-24T17:58:21.310-05:00Hi (again) Hilary: I am an attorney turned writer ...Hi (again) Hilary: I am an attorney turned writer so there is no such thing as TOO VERBOSE in my opinion, LOL! You mention you use different cameras - here is something WEIRD that happened to me last week. I was walking back to my car from Soulard Market and I found a Kodak disc 6000 camera PROPPED UP against a fire hydrant on the ground. Inside (opening the case frame of the camera) was a post-it note that read: "Help Me, Please!" I could find NOBODY associated with this camera in the immediate area so it was seemingly abandoned??!! I read online these cameras were hugely popular but now you can't even get the film for them :-( Is that weird or what? What would you do if you happened upon such a thing? I'm a tad "unsettled" by it because of the note inside.....Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754133426803804987.post-45232529885149345472012-07-24T14:37:17.825-05:002012-07-24T14:37:17.825-05:00Hi Deb — Thanks so much for your comment and for y...Hi Deb — Thanks so much for your comment and for your kind words about my photos.

I can be pretty verbose, so I worry sometimes that it might be too much, once I get started talking/writing.
